Welcome to portal 2006!
June 6-9, 2006

UPDATE
The post conferencearea is now populated with content from the conference. The final tally of over 160 people from more than 80 institutions
helped to make the conference a tremendous success. We have already announced the dates for next year's conference - June 5-8, 2007 at Gettysburg College. The current working title is Up And Running.

Gettysburg College also announced at the conference that we are looking for partners for our CNAV Portal. A mature and full-featured portal developed in 1995 by Gettysburg College, is looking for academic partners to assess the future direction/disposition of CNAV portal supported by open source and vendor open source product integrations. for more information, contact Mark Albert at 717.337.6944 or malbert@gettysburg.edu

Feedback from the conference attendees:

  • I attended three conferences back-to-back-to-back. This by far was the most beneficial for me.
  • Great! looking forward to returning. Gettysburg College was a wonderful host!
  • Excellent . . liked the way you grouped the topics. Good to have the variety of presentations . .you got to pick what was most appropriate for your own needs.
  • I have hosted conferences and also attended many conferences. This one ranks among the best that I have seen.
  • This was a conference on a "people" level rather than a "corporation" level like Oracle World, with 30 bazillion attendees, all wondering where to go.
  • Incredibly good. Logistically, this conference was the best I''ve attended. In terms of content, for its scope, it was one of the best I''ve attended.
  • Great conference - especially for the first time. Well organized, the Gettysburg IT staff were so helpful and very visible. The other thing I really liked was that the vendors were present, but not in your face.

Following the 2005 Educause Conference, Gettysburg College started thinking about a conference focused on portals for educational institutions. We heard lots of people talking about, wondering about, asking questions about and thinking about portals. We decided to have a conference where colleagues could get together and share knowledge, insight and ideas about portals. Gettysburg College has been operating, developing and maintaining its in-house portal, College Navigation (CNAV), since 1997, and we have experience hosting conferences, most recently the 2003 Consortium of Liberal Arts Colleges (CLAC) conference.

The theme for the conference, portal2006: focusing the vision, is meant to reflect the idea that every institution has a goal - or vision - in mind for a portal. We hope this conference will aid in helping to achieve that goal - or bring the vision into focus - for everyone.

The keynote speaker on June 7th is Dr. Ali Jafari, author of Designing Portals:Opportunities and Challenges and Director of the CyberLab at IUPUI. He will focus his discussion on the next generation of portals in higher education.

Nicole Engelbert of DataMonitor will present the research findings of a recent report on portal solutions in the higher education market at the June 8th all-conference session.

Corporate sponsorship will be solicited in an effort to keep the registration and operating costs to a minimum and to provide an opportunity for institutions to talk to and get information or answers from the portal providers. While there will be no corporate presentations within the program, the vendors will have visibility and availability to talk and answer questions about their product.

Housing has been reserved at two on-campus motel-style residence halls (private bath, air conditioned) as well as a variety of local hotels and motels. Participants will be able to arrange for airport transportation directly with our Transportation office. More information is available at the Transportation and Lodging links of this site. More information about local attractions is also available at this site.
